Assessing the Gains, The Message, The Impact

Democrats are celebrating their strong showing, but Speaker Newt Gingrich says Republicans have to "look carefully at what happened."

The White House says the message was crystal clear: "The American people said, 'Get back to work on the people's business.'"

Republicans were hoping to pick up a few seats in the House and Senate and believed that would add impetus to the Clinton impeachment hearings. Things didn't turn out that way, so what's next on the impeachment front?

And while the politicians put their spin on yesterday's events, newspapers and commentators around the country have had a few things to say on the editorial pages.

Candidates aside, the voters also had their say on the basics: life, death and taxes. The basic message to government was "Keep Your Hands Off!"
