Tips for the Disabled
Traveler
Whether you use a wheelchair, are visually impaired or have
arthritis, your physical limitations should not keep you from
enjoying the pleasures of traveling. Owing to the federal
disability act, nearly all public facility and many private
properties have made great strides in meeting the needs of
the disabled.
Question: What
do I need to talk to my travel agent?
Answer: Be prepared for
an advanced trip planning, especially with your travel agent.
You need to provide the agent with information regarding the
disability and any special requiremens you may have. The more
information you provided, the better prepared the travel agency,
or airline, or cruise line or the other travel suppliers will
be in meeting your needs.
Question: What
kind of service they may offer to me?
Answer: It depends what
kind of travel carrier you are planning. If you travel by
car, easy parking is guaranteed. If you have air travel, you
may ask a non-stop, direct flight, you may ask for boarding
assistance. If you must make connections, you may schedule
enough time between flights, and each airline or airport usually
provides free local traffic to disabled. Service animals are
usually free of charge. If you need hotel room, you may ask
for something close to the entrance, or emergency exit, and
you may need special facility in the bathroom, too.
Question: Does
any cruise line welcome the disabled?
Answer: It is for sure.
For the cruise enthusiast, the industry's new fleet of ships
offers special cabins for the disabled, many equipped with
facilities you want, such as wider doors, and bathrooms, showers
with pull down seats or waterproof wheelchairs, special phones
for hearing impaired passengers. Some also prepare stuff for
disabled couples.
Question: Will
they charge more for disabled?
Answer: Not really. In
fact, many travel agencies, airlines, cruise lines provide
discount for disabled and seniors. You may get more that you
want in most cases.
Have fun and good luck!
