Tips To Build Your
Network
When I took a class called "The Fundamentals
of Networks", the instructor told a story how one of
his friends got a DBA job. His friend only took several
short courses on Database, Computer Systems, etc., but got
that $130 K job through his another friend. Then he said
" Tell you what, there is nothing to do with the hardware,
it is all about the network of people." It did surprise
me.
Networking is the process of
meeting people and determing mutual needs so as to fulfill
mutual goals. It involves the exchange of ideas, resources
and contacts between two or more people. The effectiveness
of the exchange can be greatly increased by using a simple
strategy when forming your networking circle. The way you
choose may be in the church, in a restraunt, in a shopping
mall, or in a daycare center.
One of the most effective ways to increase
productivity, is to be selective with your networking circle.
No matter how successful one person on the street is, forget
about him, and think about your own network. If you form
close, solid business relationships with firms that offer
products or services that compliment yours, you will have
an endless stream of referrals. Powerful networking occurs
when one client's needs could be satisfied by several business
professionals in the same networking circle.
For example, a person decides to open his
business. What products and services would that person need
before he could even open his door for business? An attorney,
a CPA, a printer, a sign company, telephone systems, office
machines, office furniture, office supplies, computer hardware
and software, etc. That one lead would be a lead for at
least nine business. So, it makes sense to form relationships
with business professionals who can refer their clients
to you on a regular basis.
Finally, you need to maintain your network.
Parties, phone calls, social events, all work well for you.
If you always stay in your apartment, you are doomed for
less powerful networking. Go out today, networking needs
communication.
Good luck!
